What Is Anterior Pelvic Tilt?

Anterior Pelvic Tilt is a postural position in which the front of the pelvis rotates forward and the back of the pelvis rises. This position may increase the inward curve of the lower back and change how the hips, abdomen, and nearby muscles share movement and support during standing, walking, or exercise.

Key Takeaways About Anterior Pelvic Tilt

  • The pelvis rotates forward, changing the position of the lower back.
  • Posture assessment considers pelvic position during standing and movement.
  • Anterior Pelvic Tilt is not the same as lumbar lordosis.

How Anterior Pelvic Tilt Works

Anterior Pelvic Tilt changes the relationship between the pelvis and the lumbar spine. As the front of the pelvis moves downward and the back moves upward, the lower back may appear more curved. The position also affects the resting length and activity of nearby muscles, including the hip flexors, abdominal muscles, and muscles around the pelvis.

Clinicians assess pelvic position by observing standing posture and controlled movement. They consider the pelvis alongside the hips, lumbar spine, and ribcage because one body region can influence another. A person may show this posture during standing but move into a different position while walking, bending, or exercising.

From the Advanced Injury Care Clinic team

When we address Anterior Pelvic Tilt through Postural Correction, we observe pelvic position during standing and movement. Our team considers the lumbar spine, hips, and surrounding muscle activity together. We use those observations to guide posture-focused care and corrective exercise choices.

Anterior Pelvic Tilt in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person who sits for much of the workday may stand with the pelvis rotated forward and the lower back more curved. During Postural Correction, the clinician may observe standing alignment and then check whether the person can control pelvic position during a simple movement.
